Review : February GlossyBox

I recently attended TOWIB and was quite upset by one of the comments made, I can't remember who made it. Basically it was said that everyone is fed up of seeing all the GlossyBox posts especially those with close up photos of the box itself.

Despite this comment I will continue to post my monthly GlossyBox posts, why? Because they generate a lot of page views, which tells me that they are popular posts. I will also continue with my close up picture of the box, why? Because I don't want to spoil GlossyBox for those that haven't yet received their box and want a surprise, by posting a photo of the box I give people an advance warning and they know to avoid the post if they don't want any spoilers.

I was quite disappointed by my box last month and had decided that this box would be the decider of whether to un-sub or not.

The products...

DuWop Venom Gloss in Buttercup 5ml approx £7.69

GlossyBox say : Combining subtle tinted lip gloss with DuWop's Lip Venom to create Venom Gloss.
They also warned people of the tingling effect this has, probably to avoid uproar, remember the Vinies facemask in the Boudoir Prive box?

I say : I'm not normally a fan of plumping lip products as I find that they make my lips tingle but don't have the desired plumping effect, this one however does plump my lips, only slightly but still it does what it says on the tin which I like. This smells absolutely gorgeous. The only thing stopping me re-purchasing this is the price tag, I can't justify spending £16 on a lip gloss.

GlossyBox have provided us with a 20% discount code for the full size gloss. They just haven't bothered to tell us where we can use said discount.

GlossyBox say : A combination of organic extra virgin coconut, olive, jojoba and hemp oils, together with pure essential oils.

I say : This is one of the products that disappointed me. My first thoughts were, a hand sanitiser, in a beauty box? I then realised that you can use it for more than a hand sanitiser. This came as a great relief as the product smells so strongly of peppermint that I really dislike using it on my hands. The writing on the bottle is ridiculously small but after checking their website I have discovered that it can also be used for washing your clothes, light cleaning & heavy duty grease cutting cleaning and everyday body wash.
I'm still not impressed that I received this in a box that contains luxury beauty samples.

Paul Mitchell Round Trip 25ml approx £1.62

GlossyBox say : This liquid curl definer is fast drying for enhanced curls in an instant.

I say : Quite a controversial product to send out when the beauty profiles aren't working correctly. I've seen a lot of people annoyed as they've received this despite having poker straight hair. My hair has a natural kink to it but not enough to go curly, I will try this out to see if it defines my kink into more of a curl. The smell reminds me exactly of a hairdressers which I like.

Glossy Box say : Award winning pure mineral eyeshadow. Cruelty free and suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

I say : This is very similar to the Jane Iredale Gold Dust that I received in my December JolieBox, which I still haven't used. The fact that I haven't used it is just personal preference, there is nothing wrong with that one and neither is there with this one. I would have preferred a different shade but that is the luck of the draw when signing up to these boxes. This seems like a lovely product and I like that its cruelty free.

GlossyBox say : A revitalising blend of essential oils that puts you in a perfectly uplifted mood.

I say : This product was the main downfall to this months GlossyBox in my personal opinion. If, like me, you have subscribed from the beginning you will remember that we received this exact same product in the very first box. I have nothing against this product, in fact I used it all up and enjoyed using it. I personally feel that repeat products kind of defeat the object of GlossyBox, isn't it about trying out new things?

This card is the one thing that is stopping me unsubscribing straight away (well, this and the fact that their website is displaying some dodgy German message when I try and log in!), I'm curious as to what this mystery box business is all about. No doubt a load of hype about nothing but I need to know!

Overall verdict :
  • My rough estimate of the total box price is £18.13, this amount seems to be lower every month.
  • I received one full size item, that cost £1.99 and I wouldn't describe as a beauty product.
  • Again I've been left very disappointed, I feel that every month I am staying put because they promise something great the following month, but never deliver. I have been with GB from day one and do feel that I should stay loyal to them, as far as I'm aware they were the first beauty box in the UK. They now have so many competitors but fail to deliver. I need to make my decision soon.

If I haven't put you off completely you can subscribe to GlossyBox for £10 per month plus £2.95 P&P.

*Disclaimer : If you purchase a GlossyBox by clicking through on the link that I have provided I will be rewarded with GlossyDots, which will go towards a free box for myself.*

  1. I unsubscribed in about September and it was honestly the best thing I've done for a while, saved so much money on things I didn't need! xx

  2. I really agree with this - I would have been a bit gutted if I'd received the como shambala lotion again, though I got the shower gel. I also got a hand sanitiser spray which is extremely strong smelling. Definitely the let-down ox for me so far, and I've been subscribed since the start too. When I add up how much I've spent on GB since last May, against how many of the products I've used a lot.... not worth it!

    1. It really does make you think doesn't it, are we just throwing our money away on junk.
If they are going to start repeating products that will be a HUGE mistake. I'm hoping this repeat was just a one off x

  4. I always really enjoy your beauty box reviews :):)
I had subscriptions to both glossy box and boudoir prive/jolie box but have canceled both mainly due to being poor and trying to save money.. I really enjoyed receiving the boxes but they are quite expensive and I never really used all of the products.x

I think I enjoy the anticipation of the boxes more than the boxes their selves - sad but true! x

  9. This is a great review. I have had one or two Glossyboxes, but I really don't think they're to great, especially for the price! I was disappointed with the "Valentines" Box because there was nothing really in it that made it feel like a Valentines box except the colour. I expected it to have some products it that would make you feel sexy for valentines day, etc. This box doesn't seem much either!

  10. I had last months box and left within 5 minutes of receiving mine, my box was crap :) Whats the point in having beauty profiles when they don't read them and I thought we were supposed to have a little wow and try new luxury products :/ I've gone to Carmine and can't wait :D

  14. I wasn't chuffed with this month's box and won't use any of the products - I know they have to keep it different but I just didn't feel like much thought had been put into it unlike Dec and Jan box. Like you, I am only staying with them to find out what the mystery box will be - that's it if it's no good I'll be trying out another box. xx
