Gas and electric, a boring subject for most? I’d say no, it really is something that we should pay more attention to. Consider the amount that you use to run your nice hot Lush bubble bath, followed by blow drying and straightening your hair. Just a small reduction in the cost used to fuel these things could equate to big savings and lots of new lipstick :)
By 2019 the government plans for all British homes to have a smart meter installed. British Gas want to help people get a head start with some great money saving benefits.
British Gas smart meters offer real savings both for your purse and your carbon footprint. They put you in control and make estimated bills a thing of the past. No more worrying about meter readings either, these clever things automatically send a reading to British Gas once a day. Meter readings are still available and if you want to look at them they can be assessed, along with many other handy tools, through your smart energy monitor.
Despite not looking much different to a traditional meter, a smart meter is a whole lot more advanced, the smart reader will communicate to an in-home display unit (a smart energy monitor) giving you an instant view of your consumption of both gas and electric. The smart energy monitor comes along with your smart meter. The monitor can be placed anywhere in your home and will show you, in near real time, the pounds and pence figure that you are using for your fuel, making it easier to budget.
As you can see the smart energy monitor is a conveniently sized portable device, meaning that you can carry it into the kitchen with you to watch how much your spending increases when you boil the kettle.
The best thing about all of this is that smart readers are completely free! British Gas will contact you when your home is ready for an upgrade. If you don’t want to wait you can register your interest here. If you aren’t quite ready for the change there is no pressure for now, you can say no if you don’t want a new meter, however, the government mandate states that all meters must be exchanged for smart meters by the end of 2019.
It is estimated that British homes and businesses could be nearly £14 billion better off thanks to the roll out of smart meters; this figure is taking into account the initial cost of rolling the meters out.
The exchange will take on average 90 minutes to complete and there are Saturday appointments available for convenience. Both gas and electric meters can be fitted during the same appointment which means that unless there are any complications you should be ready to save money after just 90 minutes!

What do you think of smart readers? Are you keen to register your interest? My partner is very frugal (or tight as I like to call him.) so he has his fingers firmly crossed that they visit our area shortly! British Gas are very active on social media, you can keep up to date with them on both Facebook and Twitter.
