Burgers are one of my favourite foods, I absolutely love burgers with all kinds of different toppings on them, which is why when I heard that Five Guys was opening in Cardiff I was super excited and decided that was where I would have my lunch on my Birthday day out.
Five Guys is conveniently located in the Brewery Quarter which is just opposite St David's shopping centre and a two minute walk from both the bus and train station.
The interior is spacious and modern featuring quotes from bloggers and newspapers. The seating options are basic with wooden benches and tables.
What I liked most about Five Guys is that everything is very flexible, the shakes, burgers and soft drinks are all open to lots of various combinations - including an option to add bacon to your shake!
We ordered our food and were given our shakes straight away but had to wait for our number to be called before collecting our food. I ordered a salted caramel, peanut butter and banana shake while Spencer opted for a more traditional chocolate shake. Both of these were delicious, though the peanut butter did overpower the other flavours in mine.
There are boxes of peanuts dotted around the restaurant which you are able to help yourself to, I couldn't resist scooping some up to eat whilst we were waiting for our food to be cooked.
The food was served in a brown paper bag, the burgers in their iconic foil wrapping.
We ordered two portions of Five Guys Style Fries, next time we will only order one! I'm not sure if they usually serve this quantity or if our server was feeling particularly generous but there were a lot of fries, so many that we couldn't finish them.
The burgers come in a choice of little burgers or regular burgers, the little is a standard burger and the regular a double. The toppings are free and you can order as many as you like.
I ordered the cheeseburger with grilled onions, ketchup and grilled mushrooms and it was delicious.
Spencer ordered the bacon cheeseburger and added Jalapeño peppers, I'm not a fan of Jalapeños so I didn't try his, but he really enjoyed it.
Overall we both really enjoyed our Five Guys experience, yes, it was expensive for a takeaway style burger and chips but I liked the freedom of being able to mix and match both burger toppings and milkshake flavours, they also have a coke machine with some exciting flavour combinations that I plan on trying out on my next visit.
If you are a huge burger fan who appreciates quality meat, buns and chips and also likes to experiment with toppings and flavours then Five Guys is for you. If you think a burger is just a burger then save your money and go to one of the cheaper burger places.
