Restaurant Review : Five Guys, Cardiff

Burgers are one of my favourite foods, I absolutely love burgers with all kinds of different toppings on them, which is why when I heard that Five Guys was opening in Cardiff I was super excited and decided that was where I would have my lunch on my Birthday day out.

Five Guys Cardiff Exterior

Five Guys is conveniently located in the Brewery Quarter which is just opposite St David's shopping centre and a two minute walk from both the bus and train station.

The interior is spacious and modern featuring quotes from bloggers and newspapers. The seating options are basic with wooden benches and tables.

What I liked most about Five Guys is that everything is very flexible, the shakes, burgers and soft drinks are all open to lots of various combinations - including an option to add bacon to your shake!

two five guys milkshakes

We ordered our food and were given our shakes straight away but had to wait for our number to be called before collecting our food. I ordered a salted caramel, peanut butter and banana shake while Spencer opted for a more traditional chocolate shake. Both of these were delicious, though the peanut butter did overpower the other flavours in mine.

There are boxes of peanuts dotted around the restaurant which you are able to help yourself to, I couldn't resist scooping some up to eat whilst we were waiting for our food to be cooked.

The food was served in a brown paper bag, the burgers in their iconic foil wrapping.

Two portions of Five Guys Style fries

We ordered two portions of Five Guys Style Fries, next time we will only order one! I'm not sure if they usually serve this quantity or if our server was feeling particularly generous but there were a lot of fries, so many that we couldn't finish them.

The burgers come in a choice of little burgers or regular burgers, the little is a standard burger and the regular a double. The toppings are free and you can order as many as you like.

I ordered the cheeseburger with grilled onions, ketchup and grilled mushrooms and it was delicious.

Five Guys bacon cheeseburger with jalapeno peppers

Spencer ordered the bacon cheeseburger and added JalapeƱo peppers, I'm not a fan of JalapeƱos so I didn't try his, but he really enjoyed it.

Overall we both really enjoyed our Five Guys experience, yes, it was expensive for a takeaway style burger and chips but I liked the freedom of being able to mix and match both burger toppings and milkshake flavours, they also have a coke machine with some exciting flavour combinations that I plan on trying out on my next visit.

If you are a huge burger fan who appreciates quality meat, buns and chips and also likes to experiment with toppings and flavours then Five Guys is for you. If you think a burger is just a burger then save your money and go to one of the cheaper burger places.

  2. I've been meaning to try Five Guys for so long!
Your burger pictures are mouthwatering, and I love the idea of being able to add your own choice of toppings.

    Great overview!

  3. I love Five Guys, this is my favorite fast food restaurant in Cardiff. I always order cheeseburger, fries and a refillable drink. The drinks machine is awesome, I love how you can get some really unusual flavors from it like Fanta Raspberry. Me and my friend went here the other week and made ourselves feel really sick from all the different flavors. x

  4. How much did you pay Leanne? Was there anything for kids? Looks delicious but I've vowed to start a diet on 1st June!!! Sigh.

    1. Hi Linda, it came to around £30 for this lot.
As for kids if they like burgers or hot dogs then yes, if not the only other options are sandwiches and there aren't many, the grilled cheese one may be okay though?
      It definitely isn't diet friendly!

  5. I've heard a lot about this place. Looks like you had a good time and happy birthday. I'm not sure if this is a silly question, but was there much for vegetarians? x

    1. Hiya, there are a few vegetarian options but it's quite limited! There is a grilled cheese sandwich, a veggie sandwich and a veggie sandwich with cheese - I have absolutely no idea what a veggie sandwich is but it does say that it doesn't include veggie patties!

    2. I had a feeling that'd be the case! There are quite a few places in Cardiff my hubby really wants to go but have limited choice for me - this one, Burger and Lobster etc. I guess he'll have to find someone else to go with! x

  7. I've heard amazing things and it looks sooo tasty but the amount of peanuts they have everywhere makes it a no go for me! I don't think I could bare to watch people eat those delicious fries knowing they'll make my lips swell up to Kylie Jenner standards!!

  8. I love it there but it is expensive. You should try Got Beef on Whitchurch Road in Cardiff for amazing burgers and their 'dirty fries'. The skate park on Newport Road (just behing the M&S and McD's) does an amazing burger and fries for £4.50 ish too xx

  9. I've been to Five Guys in London but I haven't had chance to try out the Cardiff one yet. I love the fries- you should definitely try the little fries portion next time because I think the portion sizes are always huge! There aren't too many choices for veggies which is disappointing but I still think it's a really cool place to visit and eat out with friends. I do love anywhere American themed though! The drinks machine is amazing too, I got overly excited at having peach Sprite last time I went there! I'm going to try your milkshake next time though, I love all the flavours you included especially peanut butter so I think I would love that! Alice xx
