Restaurant Review : Slug and Lettuce, Cardiff

1985 was a great year, I was born and so was restaurant and bar chain Slug and Lettuce who celebrated their 30th birthday last month. As part of their celebrations we were invited along to the Cardiff branch last week for a delicious two course meal.

First up, the interior is gorgeous. It is very stylish and dramatic, I had never been to Slug and Lettuce before so wasn't sure what to expect, but I certainly did expect it to be so wow!

Even the toilets were very impressive, I wouldn't usually include a bathroom selfie in a restaurant review but these were so nice that I couldn't resist.

We were booked in for 4pm and arrived on time. When we walked in there was no one around so we found ourselves a little window table tucked away in the corner and then went up to the bar as we weren't sure if it was waitress service or not. We were told to take a seat and someone would be with us to take our orders, which they were pretty much straight away.

They have a very tempting alcoholic cocktail menu, with prices ranging from around £5 - £10, all cocktails are on a 2 for 1 promotion 4pm - close Thursday - Saturday. We went on a sunny day and sat in the window seat where we could see plenty of happy cocktail drinkers lapping up the sunshine in the outdoor seating.

Our food didn't take very long at all to arrive, I ordered the Lemon and Olive Oil Marinated Chicken Skewers* (£8.65) with a side of sweet potato fries*. I really enjoyed mine, I made a wrap using the flatbread and had a lot of filling leftover which I enjoyed with the sweet potato fries.

Spencer ordered the barbecue ribs* from the specials, again, he thoroughly enjoyed his meal.

As we were going back home to pick Aria up we both decided to stick to soft drinks, we started off with a diet coke* each and then I ordered a lemon, cucumber & elderflower drink* (£2.50) in-between courses to refresh my palette, this was lovely and so refreshing.

Spencer ordered his pudding from the specials part of the menu, he went for the cookie cup explosion which is a giant cookie cup containing various sweet things including brownies, marshmallows and ice cream. This was very sugary but very nice!

I ordered the chocolate & salted caramel bar* (£3.95) this was very rich but beautiful. We both preferred our own deserts to the other ones but in my eyes this really was the winner of the day, I could have quite happily eaten it until I was sick, then ate some more.

The prices are very reasonable, they run various promotions including Happy Mondays which is a whopping 50% off every Monday, this promotion has proved so popular that it is celebrating its sixth year. The service was fantastic as were the staff, they changed over during our meal which meant that we had two different waiters serving us, both were very helpful, friendly and attentive.

Slug and Lettuce will have 80 venues across UK by the end of the year and based on the Cardiff branch I can see why they are so popular. It is the perfect place for a drink and a meal (or just one of the two) for every occasion, it is suitable for families and friends and has an outside area for warmer days. They also host Wedding receptions, with at least one a month taking place and do cocktail making classes for just £25 per person, which is something that I really want to do one day!

You can view the menus and prices on-line before booking here.

  1. Your dessert looked AMAZING! Have you tried Science Cream in the arcade opposite the castle? They make ice cream to order made with liquid nitrogen! I went there recently and had salted caramel ice cream with salted caramel sauce and bits of home made honeycomb - literally the best ice cream I'd ever had!

I've seen this place whilst I've been in Cardiff but I haven't given it a go yet. It will definitely be near the top of my list of places to visit now though. :)
