I love food (hence my weight!) and I love trying new recipes, but I absolutely hate meal planning and rarely find the time to sit down and think up/google new menus, as a result I end up making the same meals over and over again. This is where food subscription boxes, such as Gousto*, really come in handy. You pick your meals from a selection on their website, they deliver the ingredients and the recipes - simple.
We ordered a box that contained two meals for four people. I struggled to pick just two meals, there is a good selection of recipes on the website each week, most of which sound mouth wateringly good. I eventually settled on the Double Chipotle Burger and Melty Blue Cheese Pork Steak with Pears.
My box arrived quite late in the evening, I'll be honest I completely forgot that it was coming so we had a lovely surprise when the door knocked and there was a man bearing food! What more could a girl ask for?
Spencer cooked the first meal, the Melty Blue Cheese Pork Steak with Pears. It didn't take long at all and he found it easy to prepare, I didn't hear much complaining/swearing/ranting from him while in the kitchen so it must have been very straightforward!
It tasted delicious, the pears and blue cheese complimented each other perfectly, and everything just worked together.
I cooked the Double Chipotle Burgers and decided to make a bit of a challenge out of it, we went away shortly after our box arrived so I took the ingredients and recipe with me and cooked the meal in a caravan using what was provided!
Despite cooking the meal in a caravan it was very easy to do. I made the burger patties that morning so in the evening I just had to chop a potato and cook the burgers. The only downsides were that as I wasn't in my own home I didn't have any salt and pepper to season the burgers as per the instructions, but they still tasted delicious.
The food came packaged well, it arrived fresh, cool and in perfect condition. The recipes are quick and easy to follow and the pack contains pretty much everything that you will need, we even received sachets of mayonnaise. The meal selections are great, there is something for everyone and you get to select what you want each week.
The main downside for me was that there was quite a lot of gristle in beef mince, I really don't like gristle in my meat so this put me off a little.
The two meal family box costs £41.99, which works out at £5.25 per serving. To get the best value for money you really do need to buy the four meal family box which costs £59.99 and works out at £3.75 per serving. When you compare the cost of an average family weekly food shop the £59.99 really isn't bad, although you do have to consider other meals for three days of the week. If ordering your first box it really is worth searching for a discount code, there are often codes for up to 50% discount, which suddenly makes the box a complete bargain!
